How to Calculate a Tip

To calculate a tip, multiply the bill amount by the tip percentage and divide by 100.

For example, if your bill is $100 and you want to leave a 15% tip:

• 100 × 15 = 1,500
• 1,500 ÷ 100 = 15

The tip is $15, making the total bill $115.

The formula for calculating a tip is:

Tip = (Bill × Tip Percentage) ÷ 100

To calculate the total amount including the tip:

Total = Bill + Tip

For example, a 20% tip on a $50 bill is:

($50 × 20) ÷ 100 = $10 tip

The total bill including the tip is $60.

How to Split a Bill with Tip

When several people are sharing a bill, first calculate the tip and add it to the bill. Then divide the total by the number of people.

The formula is:

Per Person = (Bill + Tip) ÷ Number of People

For example, a $100 bill with a 15% tip gives a total of $115. If two people split the bill equally:

$115 ÷ 2 = $57.50 per person

Common Tip Percentages

Easy Ways to Calculate a Tip

You can estimate common tip percentages quickly without a calculator:

• 10% tip: move the decimal point one place to the left. A $60 bill gives a $6 tip.
• 15% tip: calculate 10%, then add half of that amount. For $60, 10% is $6 and 5% is $3, giving a $9 tip.
• 20% tip: calculate 10% and double it. A $60 bill gives a $12 tip.
• 25% tip: divide the bill by four. A $60 bill gives a $15 tip.
