Calculate the average (arithmetic mean) of any set of numbers instantly.
Add numbers and instantly find their mean.
Try these common average calculations
To calculate the average of a set of numbers, add all the values together and divide the total by the number of values.
For example, to find the average of 40 and 100:
40 + 100 = 140
140 ÷ 2 = 70
So, the average of 40 and 100 is 70.
Average = Sum of all values ÷ Number of values
For 10, 20, 30 and 40:
Sum = 10 + 20 + 30 + 40 = 100
Number of values = 4
Average = 100 ÷ 4 = 25
In everyday mathematics, average usually refers to the arithmetic mean. It is calculated by adding all values and dividing by the number of values.
Other measures of central tendency include the median (the middle value) and mode (the most frequent value), so “average” and “mean” are not always interchangeable in every statistical context.
| Numbers | Calculation | Average |
|---|---|---|
| 40 and 100 | (40 + 100) ÷ 2 | 70 |
| 10, 20 and 30 | (10 + 20 + 30) ÷ 3 | 20 |
| 20 and 50 | (20 + 50) ÷ 2 | 35 |
| 5, 10, 15 and 20 | (5 + 10 + 15 + 20) ÷ 4 | 12.5 |
Averages are useful whenever you want to summarize several numbers with one representative value. Common examples include:
